Does anyone here who believes in god see this?

Christians and other religions who believe in god say he's full of love and gives choices to ppl. Yet in all christian books, god is very vindictive and doesn't give his love unconditionally. If you don't believe in him and ONLY him, you will be punished. If you choose the path HE commands, you will go to hell. Where is the choice? Where is the unconditional love a "higher power" should have? It looks like there is a right and a wrong choice and if you make the "wrong" one according to god, you have to be punished. It doesn't seem very nice, does it?
